It’s been a hot minute since I last posted. So m It’s been a hot minute since I last posted. So much going on on the home front that I’ve had to shift my focus for a few weeks. Hit the alligators closest to the canoe, as they say, and these are some big alligators! I am thankful for the flexibility my work allows me and even more grateful for all of you who have been there all along, allowing me to find solace in my work amidst the craziness of life, and will be there when I pick it back up fully soon. I wanted to share this special piece I completed recently. They wanted a treasured family recipe in their grandmother’s handwriting, but they didn’t actually have the recipe in her own handwriting, just four greeting cards with short notes. Now, I have done several project where a word or two were missing, or that I could sample from other recipes to pull it together, but this was a huge challenge! I carefully matched up the lettering, building each word, being mindful to choose the letterforms based on their relation in the existing word, for instance using an “s” from the end of the word versus from the beginning or middle, as they are naturally different. Or using naturally occurring ligatures, like when “th” form one single glyph. This is one of those pieces that I wayyyyyyy underestimated my time, but was happy to do because I learned a lot and I knew it meant so much. The thought has definitely crossed my mind while doing this that authenticity is at play here, but I believe I am creating a piece of art in their loved ones handwriting that would stand up pretty close to an original if given the chance, while giving them something that no longer has the chance to exist. Being able to do something like this, bringing joy to others, keeps me going on the days I struggle to find the joy during the longest of days. More progress on the restoration of these two sign More progress on the restoration of these two signs. All the sanding is done. The carving of the lettering is rough, which is why the original artist painted a border around the letters. I’m hoping to straighten the lines from the inside out. The shellac on the wood was a bear to sand down but I got it all smooth and even. Ready to restain. I’m going to add gold to the edging to match the lettering. Progress!
